Chapter Six

With these things on his mind, he looked through the water falling down out of the rocks and saw Adrian smiling and waving his hand for Conor to come on in. Curious, Conor moved closer and carefully followed in Adrian’s footsteps until he got to the pounding wall of water. When he ducked into it, everything felt surreal. It could have been a shelter from a storm, a hiding place, or even a place to make wild, passionate love.

Just then, he saw the look in Adrian’s eyes and knew what it meant. “Sex? Is that what you brought me back here for?”

“It’s great, don’t you think?”

“Sure, it is. But so what?”

“From now on, this is our spot.”

“What, this cave?”

“This waterfall, this cave. Sure. You like it, don’t you?”

“I think it’s great. I’m just not sure it’s real.”

“Damn, Conor. What does it take to make you believe?”

“Oh, I’m working on it. But you’ve got to remember. I’ve seen a lot in the last twenty-four hours. I’m just trying to make sure I can tell the real from the unreal. You know, keep everything in perspective.”

“If you can taste it, touch it, and see it, it’s real.”

“That’s not always true. You, for instance, Adrian. Who are you…really?”

“I’m exactly who you think I am, Conor. I’m a Second Seat trainee at the Savage-Simpson Law Firm.”

“And what are your ambitions?”

“I’d like to advance to one of the top legal eagles in the firm, but I know I have to start at the bottom, so to speak.”

“And how do you do that? By learning, listening, and doing? Or maybe by shoving the competition out of the way?”

“I can’t believe this. You’re making me out to be some kind of corporate killer.”

“Well, what else am I to think? You convince me that you’re some kind of city slicker that hates to camp out, but now that we’re here, you seem to know your way around this wilderness better than I do. You even believe all this mumbo jumbo that’s been going on.”

“If you’re saying that I believe everything we’ve seen and everything that’s happened, you’re right. But there’s a very simple explanation, Conor.”

“Yeah, well, you’d better start explaining, and fast.”

“Hell, Conor, there’s no big mystery here. I’m just a supernatural freak. You were afraid of the dark, but I loved it. You looked for monsters under your bed, and so did I. The only difference is, I wanted to find them, and you didn’t. I’m probably the only nut in the city who’s delighted that you’re a friggin’ monster beneath the skin.”

“All right, maybe that explains some of it, but how come you know this forest so well?”

“Damn, man, where’ve you been? Everybody knows about this place, especially an aficionado like myself. I mean, here it is hiding in the mountains. It’s got creeks, waterfalls, mysterious paths through the woods, huts, bridges…hell, it’s a paranormal freak’s dream. It’s knee-deep in spells, curses, witches, and all kinds of things. If anything’s going to happen, it’s going to happen here because this is a fertile area.
